About the Role
Skipton Boat Trips is looking for a full-time Skipper / Boat Master to join our friendly, experienced team operating scenic cruises on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. This is a customer-facing role, ideal for someone with boating experience who enjoys working with the public in a safe and picturesque environment.
Our skippers operate both scheduled sightseeing trips and private charters, including themed and dining cruises. You’ll be responsible for the safe handling of the vessel, engaging with passengers, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
Key Details

Full-time, 5 days per week, including weekends and public holidays.

Core season: March to December

Optional work available January–February during maintenance period.

Uniform provided (shirt with shoulder stripes and jacket).

Based in Skipton, canal basin.
Key Responsibilities
-
Safely operate passenger boats on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

Welcome passengers aboard and deliver safety briefings.

Carry out regular safety checks and emergency drills.

Support embarkation and disembarkation.

Maintain high standards of cleanliness and presentation of the boat.

Liaise with crew and onshore staff to ensure smooth daily operations.

Assist with basic maintenance and winter works (optional).
Ideal Candidate Will Have

Previous experience handling vessels (preferred but not essential).

A friendly, professional manner with strong communication skills.

A commitment to safety, punctuality, and customer satisfaction.

Ability to work weekends and flexible hours as required.

A full UK driving licence and reliable transport to and from Skipton.

Boatman/Boatwoman
From setting up the boat in the morning to running down the towpath to open the many swing bridges on route. Helping the stewardess down below and being a important part of the team.
Responsibilities include: assisting skipper on the boat with various tasks, opening swing bridges and general help on the canal boat, serving food/drinks to passengers, working the bar, assisting passengers with boarding and disembarking, responsible for the maintenance and running of two 10-passenger day boats, plus additional responsibilities as needed.
This person should have a good sense of humor, be flexible, patient, and know that customer service is imperative. Must be willing to jump into a small team and be a positive and helpful member of staff. Must be physically fit enough to run ahead of canal boat and open swing bridges, which can be heavy. Hours are 5 days/week which includes weekends. Seasonal work and hours per week can vary, however schedule is done in advance to best accommodate all staff. Must enjoy outdoor work and be willing to work, despite the weather.
Stewardess/Steward
Traveling along the canal serving customers with their meals and drinks from the bar. Most important is keeping the customers feeling welcomed while on board.
